Tolman began her career in Fargo, a black-comedy crime-drama on FX. Fargo is a re-imagining of the 1996 Coen brothers' film with the same title. Starring veterans Bob Odenkirk, Martin Freeman as well as Billy Bob Thornton. Tolman was recognized for her role as Minnesota the Police officer Molly Solverson. Vanity Fair said that Tolman "calmly and assuredly stole" the film. Critics' Choice Television Award, Best Supporting Actress (Movie/Miniseries) and Golden Globe nominated were presented to Tolman for her performance. Tolman was given a two episode guest role as romance novelist Abby Berman on The Mindy Show the following year. In 2015, she played a supporting part in Michael Dougherty s comedy horror film Krampus. Tolman did not want to play a number of support roles, like the ones that were played by wives, mothers and friends, following her debut in Fargo. Tolman wanted a different role. Tolman's performance in 2017 on ABC Downward Dog was based on the Animal Media Group Web Series. After one season, the show was cancelled. Tolman has been an active Twitter user, stated that she had "pretty impressive" ratings on the ABC Drama Emergence. It premiered in September 2019, but it was pulled after just one season that ended on May 21, 2020. Also, she guest starred in the NBC series Good Girls. In 2021 she was a guest star as Alma Filcott in the second season of the drama series Why Women Kill, and was Natalie Green in The Facts of Life portion in the third episode of Live in Front of a Studio Audience.
